Simple and southern Communion Bread Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups flour (sometimes I mix white/wheat flour)

1/2 stick butter plus 1 Tablespoon of oil

3/4 cup milk

1/2 tsp salt (omit if you consider this a leavening agent)

2 Tablespoons of honey

  • FOR GLUTEN FREE RECIPE - You may need to increase the milk and honey by a Tablespoon each when making GF communion bread.

STEPS:

• In a bowl place your flour and salt.

• Cut in the butter (as if you were making biscuits). Don’t let the butter be too soft. Cold butter cuts in better

• Put in the milk and honey. I like to warm these first so that the honey incorporates better. Add oil at this step.

• Start working it with your hands and rolling it with a rolling pin. Divide into two or three loaves. Roll out until it is about 1/3 an inch thick.

• Pierce the bread in the form of a cross and stripes. (If you don’t pierce the bread it will puff up like pita bread). Remember, Jesus was pierced for our transgressions.

Bake at 450 degrees for about 12 - 15 minutes.
